The Schadeberg Film and Video Collection

The Schadeberg Movie Company, with Jurgen Schadeberg as Director and Claudia Schadeberg as Producer, has produced a series of award winning documentaries and dramas which document South Africa's history.

ERNEST COLE - 52 mins

Documentary productions include:

The life and work of a courageous & pioneering black photographer
Ernest Cole was the first photojournalist to expose to the world the stark realities of life under the Apartheid regime. But the price he paid was high - a life in exile and an untimely, lonely death away from his home.
His images of South African black life in the fifties and sixties are a timeless testimony to the injustices of a society where one group systematically dehumanises and oppresses another.
Every time Ernest Cole clicked his shutter to chronicle the truth he laid himself open to arrest, imprisonment and the destruction of his images. He was on a crusade to alert the outside world to the injustices of his society.
VOICES FROM ROBBEN ISLAND - 90 mins

The history of the infamous island prison - a BBC Co-production

The film looks at the 400 year history of Robben Island from the seventeenth century to the present day.

Robben Island began as a plae of banishment for social outcasts, lepers and lunatics and in the nineteen sixties was turned into a high security prison for political prisoners who opposed the Apartheid regime. It was given the name "Devil's Island".
A series of in-depth interviews with former Robben Island inmates reveals the great courage of these prisoners to survive, despite unimaginable physical and emotional suffering.
We hear harrowing personal accounts from those political prisoners sentenced to a lifetime on Robben Island, including Mandela, Sisulu, Mbeki, Kathrada and Mlangeni, who managed to transform a seemingly hopeless situation into a positive experience.
They introduced intensive educational and cultural programmes on the Island for inmates and warders which offered a glimmer of sanity and hope amidst the pain.
The film pays tribute to man's courage and strength in the face of prejudice and racism. It is the story of the triumph of freedom and dignity over repression and humiliation.
Robben Island is a powerful reminder to future generations not to repeat the tragedies of the past.
WAR & PEACE - 60 mins

The history of the ANC from 1900 - 1994

A unique social documentary which recounts the history of the ANC from the turn of the century to the present day.
Rare archival footage, gathered from all over the world, is interspersed with documentary footage of South Africa today.
The documentary includes comments by Walter Sisulu and Ahmed Kathrada at the historic ANC meeting shortly after their release from Robben Island.
HAVE YOU SEEN DRUM RECENTLY? - 77 mins

The vibrant and turbulent fifties with original music and photographs

A unique social documentary capturing the kaleidoscope of black South African life in the fifties and the impact of apartheid n their lives.
In 1948, General Smuts' government in South Africa was defeated and the apartheid government took over. This was a mere 68 years afte the discovery of gold in the Transvaal and the beginnings of Johannesburg.
Using photographs drawn from the DRUM archives, the film includes Nelson Mandela sparring in the boxing ring, Oliver Tambo as a brilliant lawyer, the irrepressible Trevor Huddleston demonstrating against the destruction of Sophiatown, Chief Luthuli, Nobel Prize winner and President of the African National Congress, and the Queen of African Song, Miriam Makeba.
The film vibrates with the beat of original fifties music ... big band, jazz, swing, kwela, penny whistle.
Rare archival footage brings to life the dance, the vitality, the spirit and the shebeen philosophising of the period.
Those who lived through the fifties reminisce about their hopes and fears, the humour, the tragedies and the idiosyncrasies of an era that has uncomfortable parallels with life in South Africa today.
THE SEVEN AGES OF MUSIC - 56 mins

A musical trip through history - from San singing to Hugh Masekela

The Seven Ages of Music is a free-wheeling celebration of the real music and the real musicians of South Africa, a high-energy testament to a community of men and women who took the best and the worst of life in a tormented land and turned it into music.
The Seven Ages of Music traces the entertaining evolution of Africa's music from the rattle of drums by the light of a desert fire to the laid-back beat of Hugh Masekela, Dolly Rathebe and the Inkspots.
It's a wild, wonderful, energetic history that spans centuries and draws in whole cultures ... there's the pennywhistlers who blow a cheap tin German flageolet and make it as African as Sophiatown ... there's a group of miners, fresh from the heat and the dust and the danger of the stope face, stamping their feet to the insistent Zulu rhythms ... there's the township bands with their improvised instruments.
And then jazz is born in the shebeens and music halls of South Africa which inspires the likes of The Elite Swingsters, Jonas Gwangwa, Mike Makhalemele, Ntemi Piliso, Hugh Masekela and David Hewitt.
DOLLY & THE INKSPOTS - 26 mins
The life and memories of this legendary jazz singing combination
One of the most dynamic singing combinations to emerge in the early fifties was Dolly Rathebe and the African Inkspots. They were the toast of Sof'town, getting star billing in musical shows around the country and appearing in feature films such as "Jim Comes to Jo'burg", "The Magic Garden" and "Song of Africa".
Our documentary pays tribute to the talents of these jazz greats who have made such a valuable contribution to the musical heritage of South Africa.
Their voices are as enduring and resonant today as they were fifty years ago, which makes them truly living legends.
